Owing to the high rates, and the stringent conditions levied by the Insurance Companies hampering the export trade, and, it is alleged, driving the tonnage from the. ports, a movement is on foot among the meat companies, shippers, and consignees combining to do their own underwriting. THE WRECK ON THE CROCODILE SHOAL, The wreck on the Crocodile Shoal is supposed to be the schooner W. C. Kondio, which disappeared in the gale a couple of months ago. LAND LAW AMENDMENT. MELBOURNE, August 3L The* Land Law Amendment Bill, which has been introduced in the Assembly, provides for the compulsory resumption of large estates, and the cutting of them up into small areas for closer settlement. A FARMERS' CO-OPERATIVE COMPANY. A meeting of farmers decided to form a farmers' co-operative company, with a capital of £100,000, to control the export of wheat and other cereals and products, and to erect mills and stores. VICTORIAN POLITICS. .< Sir John Mclntyre has resigned the resigned the leadership of the Opposition, and Mr Gillies has been elected his successor. WEATHER FORECAST. BRISBANE, August 31. Mr Wragge predicts stormy, squally, and wet weather and rough sea between Sydney and New Zealand.
