The election for the vacant seat of Launceston in the House of Commons, caused by the drowning of Mr Thomas Owen, resulted in the election of Mr Fletcher Moulton, a Radical, who polled 8951 against Mr Frederick Wills, Unionist, who polled 2868.
CONSULAR APPOINTMENT.
Count Ungern Sternberg, the Russian Consul-General for Australasia in Melbourne! has been appointed Russian Consul-General in London. Received August stb, 10 p.m. liIBELLING ZOLA'S FATHER. Pabis, August 4. A writer in the "Petit Journal" recently attacked the character of M. Zola. Among other statements he alleged that Zola's father was dismissed from the army for theft. An action was instituted against the writer of the libellous statement and the manager and publisher of the journal. The writer was fined 2000 francs, the manager and publisher 500 franca each, while the three accused were ordered. to pay 5000 francs damages. Received August 6th, 12.35 a.m. OLD AGE PENSIONS. London, August 5. In the House of Commons Mr Balfour stated that the Government would anxiously consider the old age pension scheme in the immediate future. AMERICAN COALING STATION. Washington, August 5. The United States establishes a coaling station at Tutuiia, Samoa. A SOMALI AMBUSH. Cairo, August 5. The Somalia laid an ambush iuto which, a party of the Fourth Bombays was incautiously led by a native officer. Twenty-seven were killed. THE SOUDAN CAMPAIGN. The native tribes have petitioned Sir H. Kitchener to occupy El Obeid. WAZIRIS ON THE WAR PATH. Calcutta, August 5. A party of Waziris attacked a working party ,r < the Tochi Valley on the North-Weajjtn frontier, wouuding ten coolies.
