ROAD BOARDS.

WEST EYRETON. Tho monthly meeting of the West Eyreton Road Board was held on the llth instant. Present-—Messrs J. Addinell (Chairman), Conway, Hunter, Smith and Turner. Mr J. Burnett, Railway Engineer, wrote stating that the question of dedicating land at Horrelville for road purposes would be further enquired into. 'The "Waimakariri-Ashley Water Supply Board wrote, before agreeing to this Board's offer to maintain the fords in this district, asking what the cost was likely to be, and suggesting that tenders should be invited for the maintenance of all th_ fords for one year. The Clerk was directed to send particulars of the work required, and it was also agreed to suggest that this Board would invite tenders for broken metal at each ford for repairs, the Water supply Board to pay all costs, with 10 per cent. added for superintendence, also to request that a proper plank crossing should be made over each ford, and to call the attention of the Board to the insufficient provision for the passage of flood water .under the races along

Smith, jun., was accepted for the ploughing of reserve No. 1291., There were no tenders for tho planting of reserve No. 1028, feoutiEyre road, and the surveyor waa instructed to employ local labour for the work of planting. It waa resolved chat if those interested in the protection ol tho road fronting Mr Smith's land will contribute one-third of the cost of a pile groyne, the work will be carried I out; the Surveyor to obtain the material, and invite tenders for the labour.

COURTENAY. The Courtenay Road Board met on the 19th instant. All the members were present. The tender of Mr W. J. Walker, Is 2d per chain, was accepted for the grubbing and removal of corse and broom from the road* fronting R.S. 11330 and 23793, and reserve 920. It was resolved that a rate of M in the £ be levied on the rateable property of the district for the year ending March 31st* 1899. In reply to a letter from Messrs Herman and Stevens, permision was given to plough the unformed portion of Hoakynfr road, fronting R.S. 9296, for the destruction of gorse. Permission was granted to Mr J. Burnett to tako fifty or sixty loads of wave! m>m reserve 1249, subject to the payment of 3d per yard. Mr S. Moffatfc asked the Board's sanction to the fencing in of half a chain of Creyke street with block* 11 and 12 of Darfield township. This was declined. In regard to an application from Mr E. Egan for the lease of reserve 1488, neat Burnham, it was decided to call foi tenders. Messrs A. Bailey and C. Jeffs applied for an open crossmg across Bealey's road, to lead water into reservo 918. It was decided that the Clerk should see the manager of the(Malvern waterraces on the subject. An application from jut A. .Lane for permission to divert tin water of the river Hawkins a few chains above reserve 2619 through Crown lands into the Selwyn nver was referred to the Commissioner of Crown Lands. The Clerk was directed to obtain a further supply of poisoned wheat for small birds.

RAKAIA. This Board met on the 11th ins*. Pre-sent-Sir John Hall (chairman), Meearv Westenra, Bealey, and Colvill. It was decided to strike a general rate ot one farthing m the £ for the current year, at the Sej£ tember meeting, and the Clerk wna instructed to prepare the rote book accordingly. Tenders were ordered to bo called for the supply of 500 yards of shingie for repairs on Haldon road. The Surveyor waa instructed to have the large stones broken on Thwaite's itoad, and othe* small works were authorised. Accountts amounting to £183 were passed for payment.

ixOWAI. The monthly meeting of this Board tfaa hold on the 7th. insfc. Present—Messrs Holdsworth (chairman), Mathers, McLean, Starky, and VaUance. The Land and Snryey Department having written relative to the sale of waste land intersecting R.S. <iVO3, it was decided to reply "That the Board does not feel in a position to express an opinion in the matter. , ' It was decided that a general rate of one half-penny in the £ be struck and levied on the rateable value* of the rateable property in the district for the year ending 31st March, 189&. The Bbarcl decided to continue the purchasing of small birds' heads at 6d per dozen, ana gave instructions for poisoned wneafc to be left for distribution to ratepayers at coat; price, and that a tirial of shelled oats be made. It was reslolved that the road to Toohay's section on the Kowai river be formed and metalled where required, tenders to be invited for next meeting. The Chair* man was authorised ik> take such steps as mi-lit be deemed advisable to object to the proposal of the Kaiapoi Borough Council that the Kowai district should contribute one-seventh of the cost) of maintenance; of the Kaiapoi bridge.
