AIRS AND GRACES.

- To THE EntTOR. Sib,—Sir George Clifford has written to! mc pointing out that by the aid of the 1891 : edition of the first volume of the English Stud Book he has been able to trace the Highflyer—Marske mare back to Massey's Black Barb mare. He writes mc tbat in the 1891 edition a footnote to Miss Bell's pedigree appears as follows:—-" A" sister to Miss Bell produced a f by Highflyer, dam in 1800 of Lady Mary b"y Beninbrough." My edition of the first volume of the Stud Book is dated 1858,. and there is nothing that I oan find in it to show that Miss Bell had a sister. Miss Bell „ stated to be by , Marske—by Bajazet—by Car-touch—fSbony, >y Childers—Old Ebony, by Basto out of a Ma—tey mare by Massey's Black Barb. I may add that Miss Bell is stated in my Stud Book to have been foaled in 1770, and it would be interesting to -earn what data the Messrs Weatherby had in 1891 about the breeding of a mare foaled about 1770 which was not available in 1858. I have never seen the 1891 edition, but unhesitatingly accept it as authoritative, and at the same tune express my thanks to Sir George Clifrbrd for hia interesting correction. —-I am, kc, Geo. G. Stead.
