MR GLADSTONE'S DEATH.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE PRESS. Sir,—Empty expressions of regret go for little unless accompanied by some outward actions. It would only be following the example of those at Home for the Mayor to postpone the citizens' ball until after the funeral; or, what would be'more in keeping with the humanitarian views of the deceased statesman, to abandon the ball altogether, and devote the cost to jelieving the distress that will undoubtedly ' prevail in Christchurch during the coming winter owing to the phenomenally high prices that will be ruling for breadhtuffs. Doubtless services of a special kind will be hel-J in the Cathedral and other churches on the day of his funeral. His pure, good and great life should be an example for many of our sons to strive to imitate. Your short account in Friday's Prkss should be read by every boy in the land.—Yours, &c, Admirer.
