GERALDINE COUNTY COUNCIL .

The monthly meeting of the GeraHine County Council was held on Thursday. Present—Messrs J. Talbot (Chairman), A. Kelman, R. Mackay, Richardson, and W. Shiers. It was decided to hold a conference of County Councils and Road Boards of South Canterbury at Timaru on June 4th, the Chairman and Mr Kehnan to represent the Council. It was agreed to notify the Land Department that objections had been raised by settlers in the Orari-Rangitata district to any interference with their supply of water from the head-works, and that therefore the scheme for Arundel must be an independent one, and they suggested that possibly the Rangitata might be tapped. It was resolved to inform the Government, with reference to the Orari protective works, that the Council undertook to carry out the work provided the settlers interested formed a River Board, but this had not been done, and the matter of accepting the £200 grant would have to stand in abeyance. A petition was received from Fairfield ratepayers asking for a survey of their lands to ascertain rate per acre if formed into a water-race district. The Clerk is to examine previous survey. It was resolved to give notice of Council s intention to strike a rate of a farthing in the £.
