SOCIETY FOR THE PREVENTION OF CRUELTY TO ANIMALS.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE PRESS. Sis, —I most thoroughly enjoyed the annual meeting of the S.P.C.A. last evening. There was one remark made, however, which somewihat detracted from my pleasure, namely, a recommendation from one of the speakers to immediately cut off the head of any dog which happens to annoy anyone by barking or howling. Surely this is not the right thing to do. The dog is taking the only way- in which it can show that it is not comfortable, and it would be most strange if the Deity to whom that speaker says he prays were to answer his petition by summarily cutting off his head. My remedy (and I have rarely known it to fail) is to try to discover what is troubling the poor animal; their wants axe so few and simple compared with ' ours. A bed fairly comfortable /for them, though it would hardly suit us, a few scraps of meat, and a drink of clean water, a collar not too tight, and a few kind words, and there would be very few crying dogs.—Yours, &c, A Woman.
