PROPOSED BOROUGH OF ADDINGTON.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE PRESS. Sm, At a meeting held at Addington the other 'night it was decided to take steps to form a borougU, which would include Addington and Lower Riccarton. The object of this step no doubt is to prevent the proposed abattoirs from being erected in that-neighbourhood, and to get rid of the Kaleyards. Anyone who has lived near Addington as long as I have knows perfectly well that abattoirs will never be erected there, whether there is a borough or because, in the first place, suitable land cannot be procured in the locality, and if it could it would be too dear; and, secondly, there is no outlet for drainage, except "through the Park into the Avon, which would be objected to by every citizen in Christchurch. The creation of a borough at Addington would no doubt do away with the saleyards, where work is found for a large number of the residents, and probably the workshops too. No borough could put up with the existing «r<oke aojaaace is it* midst, and I

feel sure the Government would not sanction the formation of any borough if the industries of the country were affected, which in this case they most certainly would be. I hope the residents of Addington will fihink of the consequences before they sign any petition for a borough, as most certainly being in a borough will largely increase our present rates, besides burdening us with additional ones; also, land valuations are always higher in boroughs than in suburban districts, as comparison with Sydenham and other boroughs will show.—Yours, &c, Hill Mokton. 17th May. 1898.
