"CANON HARPER ON GAMBLING."

TO THE EDITOR OF THE PRESS. Sir,—ln Canon Harper's sermon of last Sunday, on gambling, I would like to know if he lets the Bank have the use of his money without expecting the usual rate of interest. He forgets what our Saviour said about lending money on usury. Which of us would lend a friend £100 without good security, or interest into the bargain? Then he goes on to remark on the "lower classes," as he calls them, being drawn into betting. Why should they not be able to make a few pounds as well as the rich? Then, again, about cricket, b.oat-racing, cycling, &c, betting goes on justs the same. Canon Harper or his informant has studied the " pulling " of horses, and left out all other betting transactions. What about the clubs, and even private houses, where card-playing and gambling of other sorts goes on? Why should just a few be pounced on for this sin, if sin it is, and tha majority be left o\jt ? Neither Canon Harper's sermons nor Mr Beetham's sentences will ever put down gambling, for the world is nothing but one great gambling den, and the people in it are the racers.— Yours, &c, Donovan. May 17th, 1898.
