THE JUBILEE CLOCK.

The committee have received information roicsrning the clock whioh they sent to L mdon to be overhauled and made up to date. A tender for additions, improvements and renovating was accepted in January and the work is being executed by Messrs John Moore and Sons, the firm who originally made the clock forty years ago. The workings are being entirely remodelled. The old dials having been found quite unsuited foe illuminating, the committee cabled instructions for new ones to be supplied. The antiquated hands have also been discarded. The question of bells suitable for the chimes has taken a lot of consideration. A peal of five of the old fashioned kind was first decided upon, the tenor which would weigh Sowt. Further investigation, however, caused the agents to cancel that order, and they have ( pow chosen the kind known as the " Hemispherical Bells," fixed on a steel bar in an oak frame, resembling in shape so many toilet basins upside down. They are said to produce a sound equal te the old style of bells of double their weight. The following are the diameters, notes and weights of the belle to be used:— Owfc. qr.,lb. 211 inches A 1 1 14 23 ~ ■ G. 1 2 0 25 , F 1 3 14 31 „ C 2 5 0 34 „ Bflat 3 1 14 Total weight 10 3 14 The makers consider this the geeatesH weight of bells that can be used without unduly straining the working of the clock and causing it to get out of repair. The hour will be struok on the largest bell with a heavier hammer than those used, in the chiming apparatus, giving the effect somewhat of an additional bell. They are being supplied by Messrs Warner and Sons, who also oast those used with the great clock in the tower of the Houses of Parliament, London. As the bell sent to London with the clock could not be used in the ofaimea Messrs Warner and Sons have allowed.fo_ [it. -. . ! It is expected the whole work will be completed and ready for-shipment about taw end of April or early in May. A fountain and four handsome gas lamps for the towef have also been ordered. , The committee take the opporttmifgr..of r. questing those who promised Buhseriptions towards the work to kindly hand them as soon as possible to Mr S. Manning, Bedford row, the treasurer or any •member of the committee. As the amount promised is still a long way. short of tliat which the committee undertook to provide* additional subscriptions will be gladly rec_ived.
