tßy Vaultrr.] The first; of the events comprising the match between Charles H. Kilpatrick, American amateur ex-chatnpion middle distance runner, and E. C. Bredin of London, England, at different distances, was decided on Saturday, July 31st, at Rochdale, England, The distance was six hundred yards and. the stakes. £100. Bredin won by fo t ur yards, in lniin 12|eec. Both Bredin and Kilpatrick were reported aa being in the best condition. Odds were offered against Bredin. The track was excellent, there being bub little wind. Bredin had the inside. Kilpatrick led, bub was almost immediately collared by Bredin. Kilpatrick spurted gaxnely, but could not get even with Bredin, who gained all the way. Twenty thousand persons witnessed the race. The Half Mile event between the pair was decided at Stamford Bridge on August 9th when Bredin was again the winner, which gives him two victories and the match. Kilpatrick won.the toss for position, and, at the start, jumped away with a lead of five yards. He maintained this advantage until he reached the half of the second lap, when Bredin overhauled him and won by three yards. Time, lmin oSiJsec.

We learnfc by cable that Gibson, of the Forest Lodge Harriers, won the Crosscountry Championship of New South Wales, at Sydney, on August 28th. The event was decided at the Kensington Recreation Ground, and there were ninety-threestarters, representing six clubs. In the five miles journey there were thirty-five obstacles to be negotiated, the aver&ge height being four feet. At the end of the first mile York, Pahy and Sontbwick were leading with Gibson and F. W. Thomas close handy, the time being smin 35sec. The two miles were left behind in llmin 47sec. About half a mile further on Gibson spurted to the front and at the end of. the third mile {17min 46sec) he was leading the field by 60yds, H. W. Thomas, Southwick and York following in that order. Gibson had still a strong lead at four miles (24tnin and eventually won by 75,yd3 from H. W. Thomas (Darlinghurst), A. C. Southwick (Forest Lodge) being third, and S. W. York (St. George) fourth. Time, 29min 57sec. The club placiuga showed that "Darlinghurst, the holders, were first with 46 points, Forest Lodge being second with 64 points, and St George third with, 118 points. H. W. Thomas, who finished second in the above race, is the old London A.C. man, who competed at the N.Z A.A.A. Championship A.A.C.'a meeting in Christchurch last December twelve months.

Relf, of the Finchley Harriera, who won the Half Mile Amateur Championship of England this year, annexed the 600 yds scratch race in Imin 17sec at the Goldsmiths' Institute athletic sports at New Cross, London, on July 17th. A wrestling match for £200 between Evan Lewis of America and J. Carrol of Hendley, Lancashire, took place at Bolton on July 17th. The Englishman proved no match for bis bigger and clever opponent.

The annual series of contests between Scotland and Ireland were decided at Ediuburgh on July 17th, when the visitors, won by 7 points to 4 points. Ireland were successful in the Quarter Mile, Half Mile, One Mile, Four Miles, High and Long ■Tumps and Throwing the Hammer, while Scotland won the 100 yds, 220 yds, Hurdles and Weight Putting. Watkins met in a twenty miles match for £200 at Blackburn on July 24th in the presence of 4000 spectators. Watkina was favourite at 2 to 1 on, but his legs gave way during tho contest, and he had to retire just before completing fifteen miles. Hurst was then informed that he need not complete the distance, but he ran another quarter in fast time, and he concluded by turning a somersault in glee. The time for the fifteen miles and a quarter was lhr 27miu I2aeo.

O. A. Bradley and Harper took part in a 130 yds Professional Handicap at Blackpool on July 21th, but neither gained a place in his heat.

A five miles walking match fov £50 was decided between D. Feuton and J. S. Mollett at the Catford track on July 24th, when the former led from start to finish and won easily. Time, 38min 28£ sec. W. J. Sturgeae won the Three Miles Walking Race for the Polytechnic Cup at the Polytechnic Harriers' sports on August 2nd in 22mm 7gaec. Tho record for the distanco is 21miu 14sac,

F. E. Bacon made an unsuccessful attempt to lower the five miles record of 24mm 40sec, put up by J- White at Hacknoy Wick as long ago as May 11th, 1863, at Halifax on August sth, but tho weather was oppressively hot, and lie took 25min 2Q3ec to fun the distance in. ■

The Amateur Athletic Association have permanently suspended Sid. Thomas in consequence of the knowledge which had come to the committee through the octiou brought by the ex-long distance ohampion against the Field newspaper. In Jane C. A. Bradley and A. R Downer, the ex-amateurs, wore matched to run lOOyds'during this month for the championship, but the contest was abandoned in consequence of the latter breaking down. Harper was then matched to run Bradley, the latter being conceded start, bub Bradley broke down in training, and word to that effect w&A sent to the stakeholder ou July 31st.
