THE PARIHAKA TROUBLE.
(PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.)
NEW PLYMOUTH, September 18. Inspector McGovern, accompanied by Sergeant Stagpole and ten constables, proceeded to Parihaka at an early hour this morning for the purpose of arresting there who failed to answer a summons to appear at Opunake on a charge of wilful damage to property at Pihima. .This is the outcome of a faction dispute over the ownership of land. No resistance was offered and the men were arrested, and are being brought to New Plymouth. Later. With reference to the raid on Parihaka, it appears that four constables went to the village on Friday to take the men to Opunake, but they refused to go, on the ground that they would not get fair treatment there. Consequently a stronger force was organised, but the Natives came willingly, stating they would go to Hawera or New Plymouth, but not to Opunake.
