Rain robbed Surrey of an almost certain win over Hampshire, at Southampton, on July 19th and two following days, no play being possible on the third day of tho contest. Scores : — Surrey 157 and 77 ; Hants 88 (Captain Quinton 44) and 79 for eight wickets. Richardson and Lees bowled well for Surrey. Abel was caught out in each innings before he had scored.

On the same days Yorkshire and Lancaster plaj'ed a drawn game at Bradford, the contest being for the benefit of Hunter, the Yorkshire wicket - keeper, and the gate receipts for the three days amounted to £1641. Scores :—Yorkshire 345 and 66 ; Lancashire 354 (Maclaren 152).

The return match between Notts and Yorkshire at Dewsbury was drawn, the former scoring 260 and 151 for eight wickets (W. Giuin 86 not out) to 139 and 358 for nine-wickets—inninga declared closed {WainWright 103) by Yorkshire.

Gloucestershire, for whom W. G. Grace scored 113 and Jessop 101, beat the Philadelnhians by an innings and 29 runs. the game Lancashire v. Sussex at Manchester resulted in a draw, the latter making 476 and 254 for six wickets (Ranjitsinhji 87 and 0, Brann 69 and 107, Murdoch 77 and Nowham 61 and 27) to 420 (Tyldesley 174) by Lancashire, for whom Brigge took fonr wickets ut a cost of 306 runs.

Kent, with totals of 282 and 335, beat Somersetshire, who made 253 and 151, by 213 runs. For the winners J. R. Mason contributed 31 and 183, and Woods for Somerset made 92 and 12.

Essex, with a score of 489, beat Warwickshire (274 and 166) at Leyton by an innings and 19 runs. The testimonial realised £847 14s 2d. Essex and Sussex played a drawn game a Brighton, the former scoring 475 (McGahey 140) to 219 and 380 for five tickets (Ranjitsinhji 170). Lancashire beat Hampshire in a low scoring match by ten wickets, the former making 116 and 28 for no wicket to 55 and 83 by the losers. Uriegs took eight wickets for 39 runs and four for 41 for the winners. Surrey beat Notts at the Oval on August 2nd, 3rd and 4th by nine wickets, scoring 451 (Abel 215 and Jephson 77 and 61 for one wicket) to 212 and 297 (Shrewsbury 55 and 69) by Notts. Yorkshire defeated Warwickshire at Birmingham by nine wickets, making 374 (Denton 141 not out) and 104 for one wicket (Brown 54 not out) to 172 and 305 (Bainbridge 52 and 62 and Glover 4 and 93) by the home team. Lancashire, with a total of 399 (Maclaren 244) beat Kent, at Canterbury, by an innings and 19 runs, the home team making 199 and 181 (J. R. Mason 51 and 86).
