HERRICK'S HOME.

TO THK EDITOR OF THJS PRESS. Sir, —In reference to the case of the unfortunate man White, to whom I refused admission on Wednesday last, subscribers and others who tako an interest in this Institution will doubtless look for an explanation of my action. In all matters of thie kind I am guided invariably by the practice adopted by my late husband, who had himself refused admission to this same man. White had been sheltered, fed and clothed by this Institution intermittently for the past seven years, but instead of showing gratitude he had reviled the Home to subscribers and denied the fact that he had been helped by us. The fact that he had been refused admission here by niy late husband should in itself be quite sufficient to justify my action, as Mr Herrick generally gave a man a great number of chances before finally casting him off, and gofc into hot water more than once for " encouraging loafers and thriftless and undeserving persons." Of course nobody thought at the time, that the poor man was seriously ill, and Dr. Clayton himself gives evidence to the effect that no one but a medical man could have known it. Otherwise he would never have been brought here at all, but taken to the proper institution, viz., the Hospital. No one can feel more eorry than I do for the sad ending of the poor man, but at the same time I must, in the interest of the Home and its subscribers, enforce a certain amount of strictness, otherwise the Home would be imposed upon wholesale.—Yours, &c, Florence Herrick.
