INSPECTOR CULLEN.
(PRKSS ASSOCIATION TKLEBRAM.) WELLINGTON, September 17. Sergeant Cullen, of Wanganni, lias been appointed to the position rendered vacant by the death of Inspector Pratt, at Greymouth. Sergeant (now Inspector) Cullen is in Auckland working up his sly grog-selliug cases at Te Kuiti and Otorohanga. There are over sixty charges and over a score of defendants—pakehas and Maoris, male and female. His record on his promotion to Inspector is of interest. He is a native of Leitrim, Ireland; joined the Royal Irish Constabulary in 1869, serving aeveu years in County Donegal, North of Ireland ; in the same district, with Sergeant Gilles of the Thames, resigned and emigrated to New Zealand, joining the Armed Constabulary force at Wellington in 1876. On the abolition of the provinces he was transferred from the field force to the civil force, and got charge of the Blenheim station, under Inspector Emerson, and in a few years, as third class sergeant, was sent to Dunedin for a time, and afterwards to Timaru as sergeant in charge. He was promoted second class sergeant under Inspector Pender, and subsequently, for some years, under Inspector Broham. He went to Christchureh and thence to Napier for seven years under Inspectors Bullen, Kirby and Being promoted to first class sergeant in February, 1894, he was sent to Wanganui as sergeant in charge. Two or three months ago he went to the King Country as "a life insurance agent" on a tour, which ended in a whiskeyraiding expedition, the particulars of which will be ventilated on Tuesday at Te Awamutu, before Captain Jackson, S.M.
