GRAIN AND PRODUCE MARKET.

i [by otjr commerciati editor.] Friday Evening. The Englieh wheat market has advanced sixpence per quarter during the week, and it is anticipated that the buoyancy and activity in the trade will continue. The wheat and flour afloat for the United Kingdom and Continent show a further increase in quantity, the total being 2,530,000 quarters, as against 2,460,000 quarters last week. The American visible supply is down to the low level of 19,730,000 bushels, a decrease of 343,000 bushels since the previous week's advice. The Victorian wheat market showa no change, 5a 10d still being the quotation, but a marked advance has taken place in Sydney, milling now being quoted at 4s 8d to 4s 9d as against 4s 5d to 4s 6d last week. Flour has also gone up 10s to 15s per ton, but it has not yet reached a level at which profitable business can be done from New Zealand. The Adelaide quotation is nnchanged. The ChrJstchurch wheat market continues to show considerable firmness, and both merchants and millers are ready to do business where the price asked is in accord with rnling values. Offerings of prime milling wheat are, however, getting scarce, and the fow samples that come to hand are readily disposed of. Second quality wheat, which has been so difficult to place during the season, is now saleable. During the week a Leeston line of about 4000 bushels, consisting of pearl, Tuscan and Hunter's of very prime quality, has changed hands at equal to a shade over 4s 3£d f.o.b. Another line of 2800 bushels of Tuscan, Challenge and Hunter's from the Rakaia district has also been sold at 4s 4d f.o.b. Second quality wheat has changed hands at about 3s f.0.b., and seconds up to 3a 4d delivered at the mills. In Duuedin the demand is mainly for prime lots, which can be sold up to 4s 6d, but second quality is not so easily placed. Oats in Victoria are now down to Is 3d to Is 5d for Algerian feeding, aud Is 8d for milling. New Zealand grown are firmer in Sydney, and are now quoted at 2s 4d for medium feed, and 2s 5d to 2s 6d for prime. The local market is very quiet, but several lines of feed in second hands have been placed for shipment to the North Island. The Dunedin market is a shade firmer owing to the shipping that has taken place during the week, but anything over Is lid for lines is not easily obtained. Seed lots according to description and quality will bring something over 2s. There has been a fair turn over in rye grass rfnd clover during the week, and there is now an active demand for rape for sowing for lamb feed. Some 7500 sacks of potatoes were chipped to Sydney and Newcastle this week, the bulk being for the former port. The placing of this large quantity on the market is looked forward to with some misgivings, as it is feared it may cause a glut and consequent shrinkage of price, which now stands at £3 5s in Sydney. In consequence of the purchases for export the local market is now somewhat firmer.
