SUMNER BOROUGH COUNCIL.
■ The usual fortnightly meeting of this ! Council took place on Wednesday evening. ; JPreaent—the Mayor (Mr E. R. Deacon), and Councillors Graham, Mills and Rollitt. r The newly-elected Councillors, Moaers J. S. fflonok and Alfred T. White, and Mr George 'Ranmer (re-elected) made the usual declaration and took their seats as Councillors. On the suggestion of the Mayor, votes of thanks to the retiring Councillors Roper and Hughes were passed and recorded on the minutes. The recent death of ex-Councillor Joyce was feelingly referred to, and it was resolved to Bend a letter of condolence to the family. The following correspondence was read:— Prom Mr T. Sibley, drawing attention to donkeys constantly straying on the Lyttelton road. Resolved, that the poundkeeper be instructed to lay an information against anyone whose cattle or horses are found on the roads during prohibited hours. From the Lyttelton Harbour Board, asking what reason the Council had for wishing the cottage at the baths removed. The Mayor explained the position of affairs, and said that undoubtedly the Board would give permission for the house to remain under conditions unless some very strong reasons against it could be advanced. Cr. Monck said the Council was quite in the hands of the Board. It was resolved that a letter be written to the Harbour Board stating that the Council does not object to the house remaining conditionally, on the old sheds being removed or tidied up. The plan of the land required to complete the waterworks scheme was laid on the table, and it viae resolved to complete the purchase at at once. A letter from the Chairman of Committee of the Chamber of Commerce re a training ship was received, and a resolution passed expressing sympathy with the object. The following Committees were appointed:—Works, Crs. Graham, Mills 'ana Monck ; Finance, Crs. Hanmer, Rollitt and White, Cra. Mills and White to sign cheques; Library, Crs. Mills, Monck aud White, Cγ. Mllle to be Treasurer. The Works Committee's report was read. It stated that, in company with Mr Wood, they had inspected the tram line and arranged as to what was to be done. It recommended the cutting back of trees overhanging pathways; that notice be sent to owners ofproperties to remove barbed wire fences abutting on the public thoroughfares ; 'that the Fire Brigade meet more frequently for dry practice, and that informations bo laid against owners of wandering horses and cattle. The report "vraa adopted, as was the Engineer's report. It was resolved that the Council's section of land in Hardwicke street be placed in Meeszs Lake and Evans's hands for sale, the proceeds to be devoted to reducing the £100 loan due to the Bank. The Mayor brought up the question of a tunnel at the top of the hill to shorten and straighten the road to Lyttelton, and after some conversation the matter was postponed till next meeting. The obtaining of the Society's medal tor Mr Joe Day, in recognition of his repeated successful efforts in saving life, vraa discussed, and the matter was left in the Mayors hands to approach the authorities on the subject. Cr. Rollitt gave notice of motion for a revision of the by-h\ws. Accounts to the amount of £25 7s 3d were passed for payment.
