It is reported that as a result of the visit of the United States Bimetallic Commissioners to Europe, there is no likelihood of an International Monetary Conference being arranged. Sir Andrew Clarke, Agent-General for Victoria, asked that in the evenb of such a conference being convened, the claims of the Australasian Colonies for representation should not be lost sight of. VICTORIAN-GROWN TOBACCO. The Admiralty authorities have expressed their willingness to give Victorian-grown tobacco a trial for use in the navy. A GREAT FESTIVAL. A great festival has been held at Ebbsfleet, in Pegwell Bay, where St. Augustine and his monks landed on their mission to convert the Angles. Cardinal Vaughan, Cardinal Perraud, the Papal Nuncio, and Bishop Grimes, of Christchurch, were among those present. MURDER OF A MISSIONARY. September Iβ. ' News has been received that two Benin (West Africa) chiefs have been shot by the British authorities for murdering a missionary. A third chief who was implicated committed suicide after being sentenced to death. THE KING OF BENIN. The trial of the King of Benin, who with a number of his chiefs recently surrendered and acknowledged submission to the British, is proceeding. REVIEW OF TROOPS. Paris, September 15. President Faure, accompanied by the King of Siam, reviewed 60,000 troops at St. Quentin, in the north of France. BAINFALL IN INDIA. Calcutta, September 16. Splendid wide-spread rain has fallen in India. LYNCH LAW. New York, September 16. A mob of 400 forced the gaol at Versailles, Indiana, and forcibly abducted and hanged five prisoners awaiting trial on a charge of burglary.
