Stranreagh has made & name for himself in the district, and the purchases should be an acquisition to the Balclutha district, into which Mr Ronton is desirous of introducing a new strain of blood.

Local Industry.—A very excellent specimen of local industry baa been produced by Mr P. M. Johnston, of St. Asapb street, in the shape of a hand tiro engine, the first of the kind manufactured in the colony. It h«ui been built to the order of the Government for use at the Burnham School. Superintendent Smith, of the Christchurch Firo Brigade, Cr. Andrews, and several gentlemen interested in local industries, ■were present yesterday afternoon at a trial at the fire tank in front of Aulsebrook and Co.'a, Montreal street. The engine, which is excellently finished and completed, throws 90 gallons per minute, and is 22 boy power. The pump handles are fitted with a ipring look catch, co that when they come down they lock and are rigid. Altogether the trial yesterday was a most successful ontt. It is intended shortly to have a public trial and a christening of the new engine. Trinity Conoueoational Church. —A very successful church social took place on Wednesday evening in the Trinity Congregational Church schoolroom, where » large number of members of the church and congregation met at tho invitation of tho Deacons, and spent an enjoyable hoar. VouMTßrcHiN*flATOxroKJ>.—On Thursday, Lieutenant-Culonel Gordon visited Oxford, where ha was met by Air It. A. Parish and other gentlemen who are taking an interest in forming a corps of Volunteers. On tlie requisition there were sixty-eight name* of those intending to enrol if their services were accepted. The proposed officers were MessiH Kennedy, Home and Reeves. It was ascertained that some of the men resided five or six miles from Oxford, and that three miles would be a fair average of the distance tlie men were from the township. Lieutenant-Colonel Gordon explained the conditions of enrolment, and undercook to forward some copies of the regulations. His report will be made to the Defence Minister, who will decide on the question whether the services of the corps are accepted.

Waimate Hjuh School.—A meeting of tho Waimate District High School Board was held on Wednesday afternoon. Present —Messrs Coltman (in the chair), Haj'es, Howell, Studholmo, Sinclair, G. Manchester, Rev. G. Barclay, and Dr. Barclay. Rev. G. Barclay and Mr Howell were appointed a Committee to interview Mr Wreford, of Albury, regarding his» application for extension of lease, and Messrs Hayes and Studholme were appointed to inspect property leased by Mr J. Neol. The proposals of the Timaru High School Buard of Governors re exhibitions were then considered, and the Board decided that they had no power to help any school but the Waimate District High School. One exhibitioner of the school having left, it was decided that the exhibition fall to the next on the list. The Rector's report was considered satisfactory, and after passing some email accounts the meeting terminated.

St. John Amb glance Association.—The examination of the nursing class, instructed by Dr. Jennings, waa completed on Wednesday last by Dr. P. C. Fenwick acting for Dr. G. E. Deamer. Of twenty-six women who attended the class twenty were examined and passed. Their names in alphabetical order are as follows:—Mmes L. Barber, M. A. Bain, N. Bain, L. Buckingham, M. M. Cocks, E. G. At the women's medallion classes yesterday in the afternoon Dr. Fen wick lectured to eighteen candidates, and in the evening Dr. Trotter gave his second lecture to thirteen pupils.

Waimatr Hospital.—The monthly meeting of the Waimate Hospital Trustees was held on Wednesday. Present—Messrs J. Sinclair (in the chair), Douglas, Nicol, Murphy, Hayes, Petit, Attwell and H&rdie. The surgeon's and matron's reports were approved. Mr Calvert wrote complaining that his sister, with an order for admission from the trustees, had been refused admission until the order had been approved by the doctor. After considerable discussion notice of motion was given that the resolution passed on June 24th, 1896, re admitting patients to the Hospital, be rescinded. Mr A. A. Whitelaw, Wellington, wrote asking for fall particulars concerning liia brother, who, while in a delirious fit, attacked the warder oE the Hospital and had been removed to the Timaru Hospital. Tho letter was submitted to the Hospital surgeon for his report. After discussing the matter it was resolvecl— "That this Board of Trustees, from the knowledge of surrounding facts in connection with the case of the patient Whitelaw, are fully satisfied that the surgeon of the Waimate Hospital should be exonerated from all blame relative to the unpleasant events in connection with this case." The Hospital surgeon agreed to reply to Mr Whitelaw's letter. The Chairman and Mr Hayes were appointed to confer with the members of the South Canterbury Hospital And Charitable Aid Board with reference to the demand for maintenance of the Waimate Hospital. Balance-sheets, duly andited, were adopted. Accounts amounting to £103 7s 6a were passed. North Lise Train.—A correspondent yesterday complained of delay to the mornin«j train on this line on Wednesday, from which the inference might bo drawn that the train was fifteen minutes late in rearhing Christchurch. It was detained at Kaiapoi about ten minutes and was able to make up time in the running so that it was only about three minutes late reaching Christehureh. It seems possible that in future on all occasions.there could be a similar saving f>f ten minutes.

JotrusAUSTs' Institcttk.—The annual meeting of the Christ-church Branch of the New Zealand Institute of Journalists was held yeet«rr,ay afternoon at the Clarendon Hotel. Mr S. Saunders, the Chairman, presided, and there was a fairly good attendance of members. The Committee in their annual report stated the steps which had been taken in endeavouring to get the Institute placed on a more satisfactory footing. The Branch possessed twenty financial members and one associate. The crudit balance was £11 4s 2d, and the liabilities were about £1. On the motion of the Chairman, seconded by Mr G. Capper, the report and balance-sheet were adopted. It was decided that the Branch should again protest against the continued inaction of the Council in Wellington, and intimate that unless some definite reply was received within three months to lh« Branch's itwould hold itself free to combiue with other Branches in introducing such re-organi-sation as might be deemed advisable. It was also decided that with a view to renowtug interest in the Institute ie was advisable to have the Council meetings and the annual (nesting of tlie Institute held in rotation at Auckland, Wellington, Christcliurch, and Dunedin, and the branch's delegates were instructed to support such a change.
