THE PREBBLETON PUBLIC HALL.
TO THR EDITOR OP THE PRESS.
Sir, —Prebbleton above all places is a dead and alive hole, dead to their own interests and alive to anything void of common-sense. Subscriptions are now being canvassed for by certain members of the community, viz., the Library Committee, for the erection of a public hall. What, Sir, do the people of this district want with another hall ? There is one in the township which witl seat six or seven hundred people, and yet a few, having been inundated with a certain amount of public funds, are exerting themselves to obtain more. Their object I know not, but I can only surmise that a certain amount of ill-feeling is connected therewith. The funds they hold belong to the Public Library, and 1 would like to know what more the people want than a comfortable and snug little room, and the money in hand is sufficient to erect this. lam pleased to hear that the leading lights object to the proposal, and have refused to subscribe, but when the exerting ones \go outside the district to attain their object it is hardly fair to those who are induced to give when the thing is unnecessary. With a few alterations the present hall could be made to suit all meetings; but the proprietor, I believe, has been obliged to let it out at a price so low that the returns have not been sufficient to pay a farthing interest on the £400 he spent fifteen years ago. I hope the Committee will reconsider the matter and study the interests of the community by building what is wanted—a library—and not try to take meat out of their neighbour's mouth. Thanking you ia anticipation.—Yours, &c, Sop All.
