(PRESS ASSOCIATION TKLKORAM ) INVERCARGILL, August 25 ' ir n A i fc the ,??; ice Court » Williamson Hall, a solicitor, was charged with procuring James Torranee, a medical practitioner to administer to Caroline Matthews' whose husband, a solicitor, had been living apart from her. a noxious drug for an illegal purpose. Mrg Matthew! was also charged with allowing the drug to be administered. Dr. Tormnce the first witness, stated that about Son tember, 1895, Hall told him that ffi housekeeper was enceinte about twt months, and asked witness to assist her o«4 of her trouble. Ho replied that he did not care to have anything to do with the matter About a fortnight later Hall again saw him' and advanced reasons why something should be done, and witness then consented to see Mrs Matthew, who told him that a medical man who had attended her in a previous confinement advised her that it would be dangerous for her to have another child The witness detailed his treatment of the case, which he said would not cause abortion unless such was bound to takeplaceinnatural course. Cross-examined by Mr Solomon the witness said that when Hall referred to an " exposure," ho might have meant tha* he did not want the people of Invcrcargill to know of his relationship with Mrs Matthews. Mrs Gorman, at whose boardinghouse at tho Bluff the offence which is the basis of the charges is alleged to have been committed, was examined. She gave her version of the affair, stating that she got a £5 cheque from Hall for being " good to the little woman," and also an 1.0. U. for £95 but this, she alleged, Hall afterwards took from her and accused her of blackmailing. She denied that she gave information to the police, they came to her. The further hearing was adjourned till to-morrow.
