Eartkqcatcr.—A decided shook of eavth. quake was felt in Christchurch yeaterdav afternoon, shortly before 5 o'clouk. The direction seemed to be between west and east. A very sharp shock was felt at Ashburton at n few minutes past live o'clock lost evening.

Supbkmk Court.—His Honour Mr Justice Denniston will sit in bamo at 11 a.m. today. The only case set down is White v the Minister for Railways, lor the opinion of the Court.

Kaiapoi Domain Board.—This Board, at a meeting on Tuesday, declined the offer of on old cottage at £10 for the use of a caretaker. It was reported that the excavation for the small lake was completed, and the gorso and broom had been grubbed. Accounts amounting to £9 17m were passed for payment. It waa decided to meet in the Domain to decide on felling about fifty of the pine tree 3. Maoui Fcn'kkat,.—There was a large gathering of Kaiapoi Natives at tho railway station there yesterday to meet the remains of Kemiona T tita o Tan, who died some days ago at Mooraki. A tangi took place at the pah this afternoon and the interment takes place at 2 p.m. to-day.

An , Innovation , . —Quite a new departure will be taken by the Chamber of Commerce on the occasion of the annual meeting to-morrow. The formal business will be preceded by a lunch, and no doubt there will be a good attendance on the occasion. H/isKKNiAN Sociktv.—At the ordinary meeting of the St. Patrick's Branch, No. 82, H.A.C.8.5., on Monday evening, the Branch delegates to the late annual district meeting presented the Branch with two hand-soinely-framcd groins of the members that attended that meeting, for which a heartyvote of thanks was accorded. An offer from a past officer to present the Branch with a framed group of the representatives that met in conference in Wellington in 1888 was accepted with thanks. Calkdonian Society.—One of the moat enjoyable socials of the series in connection with the Canterbury Caledonian Society was held last night in the rooms, when there was a large attendance. Dr. Thomas presided, and Messrs W. Fraser and J. J. Dougall wore in charge of the programme. Piper Major MeTavisb and Pipers Stnrrock ana Wade played pipe music. Songs were given by Miss Moir (encored), Messrs Halley, Farrant, and Fairbairn ; duets by Messrs flalley and Fairbairn, and Dougall and Farrant; recitation by Mr W. E. Ramsay ; piano solo by Miss Thomas ; quartette by Messrs Fairbairn, Dougall, Farrant and Halley. Miss and Master Stewart also danced an exhibition dance. Mica Throp acted as accompanist. A short dance followed.

Obitoaby.—With reference to the death of John, the second son of Mr and Mrs Coles Mifchcrson, of Perth street, Richmond, the Feilrling Star eayst: —"The remains of the kite Mr John Mitcherson, who died from the effects of an accident while bush-felling at Cheltenham, were interred in the Kiwi tea cemetery on Wednesday afternoon loot.
