WELLINGTON, August 25.
A Conference of brewers is at present assembled in Wellington. The Conference had a long interview with the Acting Premier to-day. The proceedings were private, but it is understood that they related to the proposed liquor legislation. *
A somewhat sultry correspondence is pro* ceeding in the newspapers here regarding Mr Seddon's reception. Several wellknown citizens, including the Hon. T. W. Hielop, John Duthie and Lady Stout, whose names were put on the Committee, refusing to act. There are said to be nearly 10,000 applications for employment on the Government railways in the hands of the Department at present. There are also over 400 regie* tered applications to join the police force, and over 1200 young women are registered as applicants for the telephone service.
The Minister of Lands has filled tin vacancy at the Land Board, occasioned by his refusal to reappoint Mr Pi rani, the member for Palmers ton. The new member is Mr Alexander Reeve, J. P., of Pehi&tna,
The Hinemoa goes to the scene- of the wreck to-night, with divers and diving apparatus. Mr Rothschild, who was a passenger in the ill-fated vessel, goes in the Hinemoa to see if he can recover some of hie lost jewellery. The Government sends an expert to survey the scene of the disaster.
