MAORI SUPERSTITION.
News from the Bay of Plenty states that the Natives in some of the settlements are much exercised over an alleged evil atua or deity which is making its influence felt amongst the imaginative Maoris. They say its name is " Tatariki,"and it is an atua of Ngati-Koroua teka. It is said to make itself felt in the left leg, starting from the toe, and the Natives resort to incantations to ward off its supposed fatal effects. A young man named Watene Matia died lately at Te Puke, it is alleged from the evil effects of •' Tatariki."
