The British Government is firmly insisting on the Turkish evacuation of Thessaly, and the withdrawal of the troops beyond the line formed by the Peneius river. This retirement is to include the evacuation of Larissa and Volo. Lord Salisbury demands the evacuation to take place immediately the treaty of peace is signed and prior to any payment of war indemnity.

The attitude of Great Britain has produced a deadlock in the negotiations for the settlement of peace.

August 20. The Imperial Ottoniau Bank at Constantinople is willing to supply Greece with tho first million of the indemnity loan.

Athens, August 19. A severe epidemic is raging amongst the Greek refugees in Thessaly, and the funds for their relief are exhausted. Their sufferings are described as terrible.

It is reported that the Greek Government has obtained a million loan in Paris for the purpose of paying oft* the first portion of the Turkish war indemnity. The money is to be available in forty days.
