FIRES.
At seven o'clock last evening a fire broke out in a cottage owned and occupied by Mr D. Milne, ana situated in Park street, Ashburton. The cottage and its contents were totally destroyed. The cottage was insured in the Manchester Office, but the furniture was uninsured. The tire spread to a good stable on the property occupied by Mr C. EL Dowding and owned by Mr W. Drummond, of Opawa, Christchurch. The stable was totally destroyed, but Mr Dowding's horse, gig, harness, and a quantity of chaff were saved. The stable was insured in the Alliance Office for £120. Mr and Mrs Milne had been absent from the cottage for the past six'weeks.

AUCKLAND, May 24. About seven o'clock last evening the residence of Mr C. S. McKinney, at EUerslie, wae totally destroyed by fire. Mr and Mrs McKinney were at church when the outbreak occurred. They appear to have left a kerosene lamp burning, but turned down low, and it is supposed that the lamp exploded. The insurances on the building and its contents are not uscertainftble owing to the holiday.
