ROUND ABOUT RICCARTON.

(By Our Spkcxax, Rac»st____] Things are commencing to liven up a bit, aa several fresh horses have arrived od the •can*.

Davies arrived from Wellington on Friday with Leda and St, Elmo. The little mare looks in the pink of condition. Keith with Boreas, Connop with Tally-lio, Quinlivan with Barshot, and A. Smith with ths Hon. J. D. Ormond's Daunt arrived from the North on Saturday. They all look iv fine form. Barshot walks a trifle short.

Mr Wyun-Williatns came up from Ashburton ou Saturday with Telemeter and Maximus. Telemeter is growing into a nice horse. J. MeC.-.ken arrived on Monday night with Social Pest and Female Franchise. Bisley, who has had a severe cold, will be an unlikely starter at the coming meeting. Limn has ia hand a very nice colt by Stepniak—Sincerity, and has just broken him. Two youngsters th't have improved a great deal since they arrived at Kieearton are the full brother to Marquis of Zetland and St. Fiorent's brother.

Marquis of Zetland is still confined to his box, and will not be seen out for some time. Salvo Shot is a greatly improved horse and does his trainer credit.

Barmby, who has been treated to a dose of physic, has resumed work again. P. White arrived at Riccarton on Monday from the North and it is understood he will ride Daunt in his engagements at the coining meeting of the C. J.C. H. Thomson is to .3 sympathised with in the loss of his stud horse St. George, who has been one of the most successful sires we have had in these parts. Merrie England, Saracen, Loyalty, Au Revoir and Morpheus were counted about his best advertisements.

Maximus hag not grown since he was here last. He is a rare mover, but 1 don't think he is over sound, and he appears to brush. Vogengang cannot surely stand up to work much longer. He goes more dotty every day, and I fear will smash np completely ere long. It is a wonder how he can get along as he does. Boreas reigned paramount at headquarters on Sunday morning. I don't mean the North Island ex-hack racer of that name, but the Nor'west wind. Aa a con~equence the custodian of the course, Mullins, would not allow work on the plough, and the graas gallop was thrown open for what little work was done. The North Island contingent is this year not to be a very big one. So far, we have Boreas, Leda and St. Elmo from Wellington. Barshot, Tally-ho, Daunt and Tir. from Hawke's Bay, and these are, perhaps, the only ones that can be counted upon from beyond Cook's Straits.
