OBITUARY.

(PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) WANGANUI, January 27. The funeral of the late Rev. James Treadwell, pastor of St. Paul's Presbyterian Church, who died on Sunday last, took place this afternoon, and was largely attended, the cortege being over a quarter of a mile ia length. The deceased was Moderator for the district, and had been pastor of the Wanganui Church for twenty years. The Rev. James Treadwell was born in Gloucestershire in 1835, and received his early education in a boarding school at Coldstream, ia Berwickshire, where-he was enrolled at the age of eleven. When fifteen he went to Edinburgh, where he studied for four years at the ministry, and four additional years in the Free Church Divinity Hall. Mr Treadwell was licensed by the preabvtery of Blairgowrie in the beginning of 1859, and in' September sailed for Victoria, where he was soon called to the charge ot Balmoral and Harrow, and was ordained by the presbytery of Ballarat. In 1865, in consequence of ill health, he returned to Scotland, where he was called to the Free Church Congregation at Stevenston. He remained there until 1876, when he came out to Wanganui, commissioned by the colonial Committee of the Free Church to succeed the Rev. Dr. Elmslie, who had accepted a call to Christchurch. For a number of years he was a member of the Wanganui School Committee. About two years ago, or a little more, he was affiieted with a serious internal disorder, and consequently came to Christchurch and submitted to an operation. As a result he was relieved for a few months, and was able to go on with his work. In May of last year he formed one of a Committee of the Northern Church appointed Ut meet a Committee of the Southern Church, on the question of the union of the churches. The agreement then arrived at has since been approved by the latter church, and it is expected that the northern representatives will probably do likewise at their conference in February next. This was his last public work. A widow and a grown-up family—four sons and three daughters— are left to mourn their loss. The sons are Mr C. H. Treadwell, barrister, of Wellington ; Rev. A. H. Treadwell, of Lyttelton ; Mr W. J. Treadwell, barrister, of Wanganui; and Mr J. H. A. Treadwell, of Wanganui, fanner. Two of the daughters are at home, but the third resides at Lyttelton with, her husband, Captain Mclntyre.
