THE DEPOSIT PENALTY.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE PRESS. Sw, —I read in the columns of the Press last week that there are twelve candidates Who lose the deposited £10. I had hoped to read next that the Government, which poses as the friend of artizans and working classes, had refunded this money, but they have not as yet. .It may be argued that their prospects were nil, but they may also have been betrayed or thrown over in favour of others, and, after all, they but acted.within the rights of electors and honourable citizens in contesting the seat, and should not be penalised. Again, if the Government can give away public money to help prohibitionists, much more reasonably should they return private money to the candidates, especially as they are generally handicapped with expense, not being run by cliques. Trusting the hint will be taken, — Yours, &c, Elector.
