THE NEW ZEALAND CHESS CONGRESS.
An interesting game played in the late ! Chamrjionship Tournament at Wanganui. Queen's Gambit Declined. WHITE ' BLACK Mr A. Meldrum. Mr A. (b) Apparently to prevent; Black plaj-ing P X 4 and liberating his Q B. (c) This, although it gives Black the open file, is really a bad move. It permits White to plant his Xt at X 5 and block Black's game. (d) This is premature. His bast course appears to be to advance his pawns on the queen's side. (e*J Black appears to waste time with the Xt, but he does not seem to have anything much better than to wait. (f) A good move. Black's queen is now shut out from co-operation with his other pieces and in danger. (g) Threatening to win a piece by Xt (Xt 5) B 3, followed by P Xt 5. (li) A courageous sacrifice, but unsound, (i) R x B P seems rather better. (j) A splendid move, which really ends the game. A fine termination to an interesting game.
