AQUATIC NOTES.
[Br Clinker.] I have received from Mr Burns, Secretary •of the N.Z.A.R.A., a circular letter re the raising of the amount required for the proposed trip of the Inter-colonial Four to Sydney. .£l2O is about the amount required, which will also include the expense's of a delegate, and probably a single sculler. It is proposed to give the crew about three weeks in Sydney. The circular suggests ways and means that clubs might take up to raise the sum, which I trust will be done without delay. A late Sydney exchange reports that Stanbury is going easy work on the Parramatta, in preparation for his meeting with Harding on the Thames. * Some time back. Stanbury wrote to Sullivan, the ex-champion of England, asking if he could get on a match with Harding. Sullivan consequently issued a challenge, which Harding took up, and Sullivan, on behalf of Stanbury, covered the Englishman's deposit. Meantime, Mr Beales, who is Stanbiiry's backer in the event, forwarded through the Sydney Referee to the London Sportsman £100 as Stanbury's deposit. There are, therefore, two deposits, and at present advices clearing up the position are awaited. Sullivan arranged the race for July 13, but Stanbury would prefer August. If, however, the first deposit is held to be the binding one, and the race fixed on that basis, the Australian will proceed to England forthwith to train, probably on Monday week. Mr Beales, Stanbury's backer, proposed to go to England a little before the race.
There was a proposal that Beach should accompany Stanbury as trainer and mentor, and the friends of the ex-champion thought it probable that when he got to England another Hanlan-Beach race might be arranged, but, so far, the matter has not taken practical shape, and it is not decided whether Beach will go or not. I notice by London papers to hand this week that the sculling match between Stephenson and Barry (the result of which was cabled out in time for last issue), was made at Gateshead on January 13th. Stephenson was to be conceded 3sec start, and the race was to be fromßedheugh Bridge to Scotswood Suspension Bridge on the Tyne, in best Mid best boats for £50 aside.
