CHRISTCHURCH. Monday, March 9. (Before H. Thomson, J. M. Thompson, an R. M. Taylor, E«i«., J.lVs.) Drunkenness. — Two Jirst offenders, a man and a woman, were fined 5s each for drunkenness. A woman who had been on remand for a week for medical treatment, was, on the application of Mr Donnelly, discharged aad handed over to the care of Mrs Cuuoii'gtoD. Illegally on Prkmises.—John Cronin was charged with being illegally on the premises of W. H. Wynu- Williams, Latimer square. The Beach sentenced him to fourteen days' imprisonment. Larceny.—James Pearson, alias Walls, alias Johnston, was charged ou remand with having ou March 2nd, at Sydenham, stolen a tennis shirt, value 10s, the property of L. P. Ebert. The accused, who pleaded not guilty, was defended by Mr Ritohie. The Bench dismissed the charge. Alleged Housebueakino. — The same accused was oharged with breaking into and entering the house of Ohas. Parsons, Opawa, on February 27th, and stealing various articles of clothing, value £2 163 3d. When arrested he was wearing some of Mr Parson's clothes, which he admitted having stolen. The accused was committed for trial.

Alleged Assault.—Patrick J.Fitzgerald, charged on remand with assaulting Frank Smith andocoasiuniughim actual bodily harm on February 24th, was further remanded for a week, the orgiuar-tail being again allowed. Alleged Cruelty to Pigs.—Peter Boag wae chargod with having, on February 13th, at Avonhead, Riccarton, ill-treated four sows by keeping alHxeti to the snout of each a long piece of wire in such a manner aa to J cause continual and unnecessary pain. Mr CreawellprosecutedonbehalfoftheSjocietyfor Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and Mr I Ritohie appeared for the defendant. Reginald Foster, Inspector to the Society, de--~ posed that each of tho sows had been rang with a piece of fencing wire, which was twisted, and hung dowu over the mouth. It would be a constant source of irritation and pain, and one of the sows had a fresh sore on the snout evidently caused by the wire. The pigs were in poor condition. J. Jannan, Inspector of dlaughterhouses and hon. Inspector to the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals gave corroborative evidence. Ihefdefendant said that the wire caused no tnore inconvenience than the ordiuary ring. Wm. Boag, John Anderson, and Robert Jones, gave corroborative evidence, and held that the wire would cause no more pain or inconvenience than the ordinary rings. The defendant was further charged wish working a horse with a sore shoulder, and the charge was admitted, but the defendant pleaded extenuation on account of the busy season. The Bench held thai the weight of evidence was in favour of the defendant on the first information, and it would be dismissed, on the second & fine of 10a would bo imposed. (Before R, Beethain, Eaq., S.M.) Neglectbd Child.—Richard Stanford Smith, aged seven and a half years, wu brought up as a neglected child. He was ordered to Dβ cent to Burnham Industrial School. Maintenance Orders.—Two persona summoned for failing to pay up under orders mo.de for the maintenance of relatives appeared before the Court sat and paid up the arrears. They were afterwards fined each 5s as a warning against future negligence. Civil Cases.—Judgments wenb for plaintiffs by default, with costs, in Vincent Bros, v McConchie, £2 18a 8d; Carr'v Oonnel! t £11 2s 6d; and Cooper vC. A. Deacon, £18 19a 4d, Heyder v Trelawny, claim £4 0s 9d, under judgment summons. Mr Brown appeared for the debtor, who consented to an order to pay at the rate of 10s per week. Hanoook v Hanoock was adjourned till March 23rd. KAIAPOI. MoNDAT, MABOH 9. (Before H. W. Biehop, Eaq., S.M., and E. Feldwick, Esq., Mayor.) Cattle at Labqb.— J. Stark for allowing three cows to stray on to embankments was fined 5a and coßts 12a. .
