Joseph Bamby was bora at Yorfr in 1858. is Hβ was a chorister in York Mineter from n 1846 to 1852, a studanS at the Royal j. Academy of Music from 1854 to 1857, orgauist in London churches frosn 1853 to 1886, and conductor of oratorio concerts at '• St. James's and Krator Halls from 1865 to Lβ 1872. He succeeded Gounod as conductor t of the Ro/al Albert Choral Society jn 1872, f, and was appointed Preceutor and Director }' of Musical Instruction at Eton College in c 1375. He conducted the firat Pas3iou eerd vice in England at Westminster Abbey in a 1871, the State receptions of the Shah in •r 1875 and 1889, and of the Cz\r in 1874, &c. ir Ho wrote the oratorio '* Rebekah." and if many hundreds of services, &:. He was n knighted tn 1893.
