' Parsona .had obtained a long lead at the half-diatanoe, but the Italian put on a , splendid spurt and cut him down, and, amid great excitement, won by inohes. Time, 2mm 44 l-sth sec. Five Mile Championship of Australia—Martin (America), 1; Lewis (New South 2. Lewis lodged a protest against the American 3 on the ground that he had unfairly mll terfered with him. The protest was upheld, and the race was awarded to Lewis ; Porta second. Parsons started, but dropped out at the end of a mile.
