SELWYN COUNTY COUNCIL.
♦■ The Selwyn County Council met; at 10.30 a.m. yesterday. Present—Messrs W. Duulop (iv the chair), R. Westenra, J. G. Murray, J. Gough, VV. Bong, J. Beanie, a&d H. VV. Peryman. Apologies were received for the abaenoe of the Chairman and Mr MoHaffie, the latter of whom received leave of absence for two monthe. A letter was read from Mr Joynfc advising Mr Morland'e acceptance of the Council's offer in respect of damage done to hie property by fire. The Lake Coleridge Road Board wrote that complaints had been made as to the insecurity of the south approach to the Bakaia Gorge bridge, also reporting the growth of sotne Californian thistles. It was decided to forward a copy of the letter to the Ashburton County Council.* The report of the Inspector of Slaughter* honeea was read and adopted, and on ite recommendation torty-two lioenaea were renewed. ' A letter was read from the Colonial Secretary's office stating that his Exoellenoy the Governor had aasented to the Connoil'e by-laws nnder the Abattoirs and Slaughter* houses Act. Mr Peryman reported concerning the drain at the Lunatic Asylum, of whioh complaints had been made. He recommended that the drain, which wai on the north side of land. lately acquired by the Asylum authorities, should be enlarged, that the cost should be borne equally by the Halswell Road Board and Asylum authorities, and that he could nob see that the Council was under any responsibility in the matte* The report was adopted. It was decided to ask the St. Albans and Linwood Borough Councils to adopt slaughterhouse by-laws eimilar to those adopted by this Council. A petition was received from about fifty ratepayers on Lake Elleemere flat, asking, on account of the bad fords, that a bridge should be erected over the Canal near Babbit Island. It was deoided to refer the petition to the Springs Road Board for their favourable consideration. MrR. M. McDonald interviewed the Counoll respecting the condition of a portion of the Lincoln road, along whioh the Addington tramline has been extended. It. was ultimately deoided to make a grant of £20 to the Spreydon Board for purposes of metalling and making up the road. It was deoided to invite tenders to be lent in by February 12th for making up the embankments of the EUesmore Canal. Accounts amounting to £1600 Aβ 4d were passed for payment and the Council adjourned. At a special meeting of the Council, held at noon, a speoial order was made delegating powers re drainage to the Lincoln Road Board.
