AUCKLAND.
Auckland, December 23. The first gala of the season in connection with the Auckland Swimming Club took place on Thursday evening at the fresh water baths. There was a large number of spectators present, including many ladies, and the affair was probably as successful as any of the galas held by the club. Messrs A. Goldwater and J. T. Armitage acted as judges, and Mr H. Hughes was starter. Results:— 12 Yards Maiden Race, for members of the EUersße Swimming Club.—Hutchison, 1; Robiason, 2 ; Wilkinson, 3. Time, 67 l-sth tec. 72 Yards Handicap, for boys under fourteen years.—S. Woods, 1. Time, 67sec. . School Girls' Race, 36 yards. —A. Barber, I; A. Nicholas, 2 ; N. Moore, 3. Six competed, and the race resulted in a splendid contest between the three placed competitors. 108 Yards Handicap.—The final heat resulted in an exciting race, the placed men finishing all in a bunch. The judges placed them as follows :—John Cassidy, 9sec, 1; H. J. Bailey, scr, 2; M. Scott, 2sec, 3. lime, 97 3-sth sec. Running Neat Header (off springboard).— There wero several competitors, and diving, on the whole, was very clean, J. W. Browne (the Secretary of the club) winning, with Dixon second. 36 Yards Ladies , Handicap.—Miss B. Keane, 2sec, 1; Miss M. Symes, 2; Miss Evans, scr. 3. 72 Yards School Boys' Championship.— W. Stone, 1; S. Woods* 2. Time, oOaec. Cigar and Umbrella Race.—H. J. Bailey, 1; J. Percival, 2 ; M. Scott, 3. Teams' Race.— City team, (S. J. Bailie, P. Bailie.G. M. Goldwater, and A. Goldwater) 1; Parnell, (Hedges, Percival, Jas. Cassidy, and Nolan) 2 : North Shore, (Scott, Fraser) Brown, and Btirgcss) 3. Polo Match.—Hedges' team. 1; H. J. Bailey's team 2. Mr \V. J. Allen gave an exhibition of Long Diving, the distance being about sixty I'ards, and the time under water was about 53 iJsecs.
