IN the course of his third address on the " Reunion of Christendom," Bishop Grimes etated— "As to the infallibility of the Pope .... any Catholic could inform him that though defined as an Article of Faith at the Vatican Council, the infallibility of the Visible Head 0/ the Church was always believed, otherwise it could never have been defined." This statement is not true. Many facts might be quoted which would disprove it. The following unassailable fact conclusively proves what English Roman Catholics, so late as 1833 (only some thirty years before the dogma was defined), thought of the infallibility of the Pope. In that year a discussion took place at Hammersmith, before a large audience, half of which consisted of Roman Catholics and half Protestants, between Dr. Cumniinir, on behalf of the latter, and Mr French (an eminent barrister) for the former. As Mr French was a layman Dr. Cumminj* demanded that proper evidence should be produced that Mr French was duly authorised and accredited by his Church as an official controversialist; such credentials were produced, and the discussion took place, extending over eleven nights, Mr French being assisted by faur priests. A verbatim report of the discussion was published, each of which was signed by both disputants as being " faithfully and correctly iciven." On May 7th Mr French said—"l know there are some divines of the Church of Rome who think that the Pope, with regard to faith, is infallible. I am here this day, not to answer for private opinions, but to defend our Articles of Faith. If I believe the Pope infallible, Ido not sin: but lam bound, under pain of sin, to believe a general Council with the Pope at its head to he infallible. There are some of the Catholic divines who have asserted it. We do not believe it; it is not an Article of our Faith; it is rather repugnant to oar Faith." (" Hammersmith Discussion " pa;,'e 421.) In 1839, the most eminent duly authorised Roman Catholic controversialist in England, publfely stated with respect to the infallibility of the Pope: "WE DO NOT BELIEVE IT ; IT IS NOT AN ARTICLE OF OUR FAITH ; IT IS RATHER REPUGNANT TO OUn FAITH." In 1835, Bishop Grimes, with consummate audacity, publicly asserts : " The infallibility of the visible Head of the Cnurch WAS ALWAYS BELIEVED. OTHERWISE IT COULD NEVER HAVE BEEN DEFINED."
