HAWKE'S BAY.

Napier, December 9. The Hawke's Bay J.C.s committee met on Friday afternoon and transacted a good deal of business. Capt. Russell (President) was in the chair, with the Hon. J. D. Onnond, Messrs W. Douglas, G. Hunter, and C. A. Loughnan present. A large amount of correspondence was duly dealt with as follows:—The Secretary of the Waipawa County Racing Club wrote asking

for the prior right to the Ist of January in future, starting from 1897, but it was resolved that the Metropolitan body had no power to grant a specified date to any one club. Mr W. Rathbone forAvarded the transfer of the bay filly Moira and the chestnut colt Sparkle recently sold to Mr J. E. M'lvor ou behalf of a syndicate. This- Avas agreed to. In reply to a letter read in regard to CraAvford's starting machine, the secretary avrs instructed to renlv that the machines Averc not required ; from the Wanganui J.C stating that John Farrcll had been refused a jockoy's Puense, and that Harry Guildford, of Ohingaiti, had l»eoii refused «.* trainer's and jockey'••* license. The Mohaku R.C. forwarded a list of persons and horses- taking part in an unregistered meeting at Mohaka in March, 1894, and asked that the disqualification incurred thereby be now removed. The suggestion avos agreed to, and the disqualification remoA*ed. A letter was received from Mr H. H. Jackson asking to haA-e his colours registered. It was resolved that Mr Jackson be requested to select some other colours, as there Avere too many red jackets. It was also resolved to notify the oAvner of "all red" that he must alter his colours, they being the same as those of another owner's already registered. The following programmes Avere approA-ed :— Woodville Jockey Club, February sth and 6th ; Rissington District Hack Race Meeting, February Bth; DaneAnrke Jockey Club, 29th January; Marumaru Station Hack Racing Meeting, January Bth (subject to alteration in accordance with rules); Wairoa County Racing Club, February sth and 6th (subject to production of balance sheet); Mohaka Racing Club, held over (application not accompanied by programme. ) A number of trainers, jockeys and apprentices' licenses and oAvners permits Avere granted. P. Martin arriA'ed at Hastings on Thursday last, and receiA'ed quite an ovation from his man}' friends, cA r ery one of whom expressed pleasure at seeing him back to the land in Avhich he had gained so many A-ictories. His stay was not long, as he left for Auckland last evening to attend to The Possible's preparation for the Auckland Cup and other engagements in the northern capital. A. Woods has started to work Leontine on Napier Park Racecourse. This horse has had a very successful season so far, and, as he is only six years old, probably he may yet prove a Avinner of a big race. He has shown us that at the finish of a race he can gallop, but somehow his loins seem to be affected in a sustained effort.

Moonraker was started again this morning afterknockinghimself abont at Feilding. The gallop did him good, and he pulled up quite fresh? His OAvner has had a pair of patent l>oots made for him that should prevent any future injury, at least on the training track. Another that I saAv going this morning was Qneensborough, and she also has improved on her late form. As she proved that she could gallop in Australia, it should not be long before she returns her expenses to her present OAvner.

Morag is also showing good form on the Park track, and he does not seem to trouble about his leg when jumping the little sticks. Ho«ever, although the skin has all healed up there is a danger that it will not haA'e sufficiently set before he is started to race. Given time I do not think there is a faster horse over big conntry in N.Z. When iip at Woodville last week I had a look at the two geldings of Mr W. Lemon's, bought at Mr Douglas' last annual sale. They are both now two-year-olds, one being by Torpedo—Primrose and the other by Quilt —Jeuzail. The former, which has been named Bush Rose, is well furnished, and giA*es every appearance of proA*ing a much better horse than anything yet thrown by the successful mare, albeit she has given us such animals as King Rose, Fortrose, T. Rose, and Pinrose. He shows power all OA*er, and stands about 15hd 3in, Avith a fine oA'en back and good ribs. Mr Lemon tells mc that he will not break hi iv in until after the New Year, and does not intend to start him before the sprinv. The Quilt—.Jeuzail colt is still unnamed, but I should recommend the name that Avas intended for his sire, that is Mosaic. This youngster has not the bone of his stable companion, and is built altogether on different lines, but for a short course, or up to a mile and a quarter, he should hold his own in any company. He stands over a lot of ground and has a clean pair of legs with a grand body and well arched ribs. He shows plenty of propelling power and is a colt that is likely to come early, though he Avill not be raced before next spring. Passing down the lines I hod a look at the Danevirke Jockey Club's stand, which will fulfil the requirements of the club for many years to come. It has been erected on the best part of the course for sightseers, but a coat of paint is badly wanted. While at Woodville a visit to the course was a sine qua non, and, as usual, everything looked equal to the best-appointed club. The training track is in perfect order for jumpers and flat racers, the plough being perfection. Mr Nicholson, the energetic secretary, and his officials deserve and, if possible, should be granted their two meetings a year. OAving to the curtailment of one meeting the club has decided on a tAA'o days' meeting in February, on the sth and 7th, wh9n a good sum in stakes Avill be divided among owners, the big eA'ents, being sufficient to induce some of our best horses to be present.

The entries receiA*ed for the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club's Summer Meeting are by far the largest on record for this season of the year, Avhen so many animals are away from home competing for richer stakes. For the eight races ninety-two have paid to see the Aveights and, as feAV owners have two entries in any one eA'ent, good fields should be the result.

Mr Henry was up to time with his weights for the WaipaAva County Racing Club's Summer Meeting, and should be credited vrith a good acceptance on the night, although he has treated some of the animals rather harshly. In the Summer Handicap I fail to see why Torpina should be called upon to give Annoureux Ist 21b or Rip Van Winkle 71b and a year, besides gelding allowance, and again t would prefer Zanella's chance asa five-year-old, with Bst 51b up. The only one to beat these should be Heavenly Twin, AA-ith 6st 121b. In the Handicap Hack Race, Wikitoria, with 7st 31b, reads exceedingly well, and next I like Flaneur, Bst lib, Goosander and Triton at 7st 111b. Lotion has been allotted list 121b in the Welter, and as he always comes at the right end it will not sufprise mc to see him finish in front. Torpina has been placed at the head of affairs in the W.R.C. Handicap, but it will surprise many should he start, and, good as the gelding might be, the handicapper has formed a greater opinion of him than the majority here who saw the colt run in Christchurch. The rest of the owners have nothing much to complain of. Prairie Grass, with Bst 31b, if Avell, should make the pace fast, while the distance might prove too far for Zanella (Bat 31b) and Searchlight (Bst), and Moonraker, on recent form, has none too much weight Avith 7st 131b, while Waingongoro (7st 101b) and Orion's Belt (7st 91b) ought to be among the acceptors. O* those below, Lotion (7st 31b) and Popgun (6st 91b) are the best. In the Flying Handicap of those above Bst Moonraker and Brooklet catch the eye first, Avith Armoureax and Allan-a-Dale of those below that weight. Of the eighteen weighted for the Hack Flying Wikitoria (7st 61b), Sequah (7et 81b), Rainbow and Streamlet (7st 101b) and Beauhamais (7st) should furnish the winner;

Mr W. Broughton Avill sell bis thoroughbreds this month. They consist of brood mares, yearlings, two-year-olds and upwards.
