A despatch received by the Warrimoo, dated Montreal, October 26th, says that the Government had decided to withdraw the offer of 750,000 dollars for a fast Atlantic service. An arrangement had been made between the Government and the Allan and Dominion line of steamships by which a subsidy would be granted to each Company, each agreeing to put in commission two seventeen knot vessels. A DEFECTIVE LIFT. Melbourne, December 12. Signor De Alba, the well - known artiste, obtained a verdict against the Freehold Investment and Banking Company for injuries to his wife caused by a defeotive lift at the defendants' buildings.

FATAL FIRE. During a fire at Braybrook, the occupant of the house, Mrs Brundel, forced her way in through the flames to save her baby. Both - were very severely burned. The mother died, and the child lies in a serious condition. An old lady named Watts, while helping to quench the flames, dropped dead from excitement. j LOST IN THE BUSH. Adelaide, December 12. The recent interruption to the. overland line to Port Darwin has been explained by the fact that the departmental repairers, discovering the wires were cut near Alice Springs, traced some foot tracks through the bush, and found an old man in the last extremity. He had been two days without water and, becoming almost demented, cut the wire in the _hope of attracting relief. WOOD PAVING. Hobart, December 12. The Government has granted £100 for the experimental laying of 50ft of Tasmanian hardwood for paving in the principal street.
