MANUAL LABOUR IN PARIS.
Manual labour in Paris is even worse than In London. It seems that the scavengers in the employment of the Paris Municipality get 35 centimes avi hour, that is to iay, very little more half the docker's "tanner." Roadmenders are paid 4 francs a day, or rather less than 3s 4d. In France, as is well known, everything pays a duty for the avowed purpose of protection, and M. Bieline and his party are ever agitating for increased stringency in the tariff dues on the old familiar pretence that though this makes goods dear it raises wages. The poor icavengers of Paris must realise in a practical way the mockery of all this when they have to pay artificially increased prices «for food out 0! their scanty earnings.
