FRENCH TRADE AND PROTECTION.

M. Roche, in the Paris Matin, has given a review of the French export trade during half a century. The figures, whish the Standard's correspondent at P*m telegraphs over, go to show that France has been rapidly loeing ground as an exporting country:— . , ■ While there was an increase from 938 OOO.OOOf in 1849 to 3872 millions in 1875, there wo* a falling off onriDg the next fifteen years, and since 1890 the decrease hM been at a far more rapid rate. In short,

the export trade of 1894 only amounted to 3078 million* as against 5039 millions in 1865. Comparing the position of France with other leading countries. M. Roche shows that whereas in 1850 France came next to England, and Germany occupied fourth place, during the two decades irom 1370 co 1890, EngUnd still maintained its supremacy, the L> nited Slates went up to second place, Germany came third, and France waa relegated to fourth position. In 1834 the total value of the exoorts of the ten leading countries reached 29 milliards, while the French proportion to the whole had fallen from 19 per cent, to 10 per cent.
