SALMON TROUT IN NEW ZEALAND.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE PBESS. . Sib,—Having received a reply from Mr Deans, I am now in a position to write to yon again for the last time. I regret to aay that his letter is too long to ask you to publish it in full, but the tenor is to this effect, that the mistake about the salmon trout arose over the shipment of ova in 1884 or 1885. It appears that one or two boxes of this shipment sent; out by Sir James Maitlaod were marked salmon trout ova, and in consequence of this inquiry was made of him about it, and thaD he wrote in reply that no salmon or sea trout ova had been sent. If Mr Farr got a portion of this shipment, this explanation shows how he may have bean misled, although the Society has nothing to show that he did get any portion of it. Mr Deans further say 3 that he has other strong reasons for believing that we have no salmon or sea trout. I think the Acclimatisation Society should go into this matter and clear it up before the issue of their next annual report.—Yours, &c, W. H. Spackmax. May's road, Papanui, near Chriatchurch, August 19tb, 1895.
