CHRISTCHURCH HOSPITAL.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE PRESS. Sir, —Kindly allow mc to point out to your correspondent " Gas Bag," who must be a blatant humbug, that in common manliness before he throws his mud and vitriol at a better man than himself he should not do so under an assumed name. If he can reconcile the finding of the Commissioner with the evidence I am sorry for his intelligence. The public, that is the intelligent portion of it, have to thank Dr. Stewart for using the only means in his power to successfully expose abuses at the Hospital, and also for his endeavours to obtain for the poor of this city more than one penny with which to buy a meal. Let mc also remind your readers of the way the public reward the men who protect their vital interests. An anonymous letter appeared in some newspaper in New Zealand stating that a number of bridges were in au unsound and highly dangerous condition. A Commission of Enquiry was appointed, which succeeded in finding the writer of that letter, who proved to be a man in Government employment, who used tho only means he had of exposing a state of things that must have been known to certain parties in power. Although the bridges were proved to be in a dangerous condition, he was rewarded by being turned out of his billet, and he recently committed suicide. Did the public move a finger to prevent the bread being taken out of his mouth, yet this dead man may have saved the liveß of thousands. Is this the way the people of New Zealand encourage men to protect their lives and expose abuses ? Do I need point to the sinister features of every inquiry we have had, and the fact that our fellow men are still expected to exist in misery on a penny a meal, despite the recommendations of an inquiry we had (thanks to Dr. Stewart). The men of this city, if. they are men, should t read!* practical lesson to those who perpetrate and those who encourage such iniquities:— Yours, &c.', Traveller.
