CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

The usu»l monthly meeting of the Committee of the Chamber of Commerce was hold on Friday afternoon. Present —Messrs G. Humphreys (President, in the chair), I. Gibbs (Vice-Presidsnt), E. W. Roper, Recce, Ghrystal!, Kaye, Struthers, aud Waymouth. An apology was received from Mr W. D. Meares. The followißg*corr<fepondence'3vas considered : —From the Auckland Chamber of Commerce asking for information as to the best means of proceeding in harmony with other Chambers of Commerce as to certain anomalies in the Land and lucome Tax Act, 1891. From the Dunedin Chamber, covering copies of resolutions adopted — (1) Re the Chattels Transfer Act, 1889. After discussion, the following resolution was adopted : —" That in the opinion of this Chamber all assignments of book debts should be registered under the Chattels Tranafer Act, 1889." It was agreed to forward copies of the above resolution to the Hon. the Minister for Justice, and to the other Chambers ot Commerce throughout the colony. (2) Re District Court Judges and Stipendiary Magistrates with extended jurisdiction, that they should hold their appointments during good behaviour, with salaries fixed by statute. This was agreed to. From the London Chamber of Commerce, inviting the Chamber to participate in a third Congress of Chambers of Commerce, to be held in London in June next, and asking for the appointment of delegates to represent this Chamber thereat. A circular was received from the League for the promotion and development of gold miuing, Hokitika. The report of the sub-Committee on the letter received from the Dunndin Chamber re the "Land and Income Tax Act," was brought up and further considered. A letter from the liquidator of the Aahburton Working Men's Co-operative Society, pointing out the need for amendment in the Industrial and Provident Societies Act, 1877, which allows the withdrawal of capital. It was resolved: — " That in the opinion of this Committee, the Industrial and Provident Societies' Act of 1887 should be amended in the direction of preventing the withdrawal of members or share capital from any Association trading under this Act without giving cix monthe' notice in writing to every creditor of such Association." After passing accounts the Committee adjourned.
