MAGISTERIAL.
CHRISTCHURCH. Saturday, June 8. (Before H. W. Bishop, Esq., S.M.) Drunkenness.—-for this offence a man was fined sa, or in default twenty-four hours' imprisonment. Alleged Wife Desertion. — A case against John Hunt, charged with having deserted his wife, was allowed to be withdrawn, Inspector Broham stating that Mrs Hunt did not wiah to proceed further. Civil Case.—Betts v Eayres and wife, claim £5, or the return of articles detained for arrears of board, and £5 as damages for the detention. Mr Byrne for plaintiff, Mr McConnel for defendant. There was a counter claim ol £5 10s for arrears of board, and the value of a brooch lent to plaintiff. The case had been twice adjourned to allow of proof of Miss Betts' ownerahip of the articles detained. This having been settled substantially in the affirmative, the articles were ordered to be given up to her, with £1 damages, with cost 3£2 18s. On the counter claim judgment was given.for Mr and Mrs Eayres for £3 10s, with costs £1 4s.
Alleged Larceny.—Jane Williams and her daughter, Elizabeth May Williams, were charged with having, on May 9th, stolen from the Christchurch Railway Station a handbag containing £1 17s 4d in cash and 1 opal necklace, _ opal rings, 1 opal brooch, 1 gold locket and chain, 1 sapphire and diamond brooch, and 1 gold bangle, valued in all at £50, the property of Mrs Oatway. Mr Byrne appeared for the accused. Inspector Broham said that Mrs Oatway was in a distant part of the colony, and he asked for a remand until shs could appear. Mr Byrne did not oppose the application, but said that, the property having been given up, he hoped that the accused would be admitted to light bail. They were remanded till June 17th, bail being fixed for each at themselves £25, and one surety in £25.
