London, May 23. It is rumoured in official circles that the Earl of Glasgow will succeed the late Sir E. W. Duff as Governor of New South Wales.
CONSECEATION OF THE BISHOP
OF ADELAIDE
The Eev. John Eeginald Harmer, Dean of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, who accepted the Bishopric of Adelaide, rendered vacant by the appointment of the Eight Eev. G. W. Kennion, D.D. to the See of Bath and Wells, was consecrated to-day at Westminster Abbey by the Archbishop of Canterbury, assisted by the Bishops of Manchester, London, Bath and Wells, and Salisbury. The Eev. Canon Geo. Body preached. JABEZ BALFOUE. Jabez Balfour has been committed to stand his trial at the June sessions on six charges.
OSCAE WILDE.
Oscar Wilde's case is adjourned. The charge against him in connection with Sheeley has been withdrawn, as there was no corroborative evidence. LOED SALISBURY AT BRADFORD. Lord Salisbury, in his speech at Bradford, said it was imperative for the Empire to assume new responsibilities when opening new markets in uncivilised nations. THE WARWICK ELECTION. The vacancy caused in the representation of Warwick and Leamington in the House of Commons, owing to the retirement of the Speaker, Viscount Peel, has been filled by the return of Mr Lyttelton, a Unionist, by a majority of 500 votes. NEW CARGO STEAMER. The P. and 0. Company's new cargo steamer Borneo, of 5000 tons, has been launched.
THE AMEEE'S SON.
The son of the Ameer of Afghanistan has arrived in England, and great preparations are being made to entertain him. LORD ROBERTS. Lord Roberts has been promoted to the rank of field-marshal. PACIFIC STEAMERS AND CABLE The Times, in referring to the deputation from the Associated Chambers of Commerce, which will wait to-day on the Premier, the Chancellor, and the Postmaster-General, in support of the resolution carried at the Canadian Conference, favouring a subsidy to the Pacific steamers and cable, strongly urges Lord Rosebery to assent to the proposals of the colonies, which it says, have already taken their part in welding the Empire. It points out that the colonial taxpayers are bearing the burden.
CHINESE EMPEKOB'S APPEALS.
Shanghai, May 25
A rescript hy the Emperor of China declares it was impossible to continue the war with corrupt officers and rabble troop 3, and implores the people to make allowances for the difficulty of the situation which compelled the treaty with Japan. The Emperor earnestly urges reforms.
BIMETALLISM.
Washington, May 24.
The Director of the United States mint says the increased gold output, especially of Australian gold, disposes of the contention of the supporters of silver as to the insufficiency of gold.
