TO THE EDITOR OF THE PRESSBnt,—May I ask your help in a case . which yon will, I think, admit is one of extreme hardship. A Scandinavian, who speaks very little English, is certified to by a doctor as going blind. One eye is suffering from a clot of blood, and the other, in sympathy, ia growing weaker every day, and it is fairly certain that before anything can be done for tho poor fellow that he will be blind. This man, armed with a doctor's certificate, has appealed to the Charitable Aid Board, with the result that he has been granted an allowance of 4s per week to keep himself, wife and .three children. In addition to this a rent allowance of 2s od per week towards rent is given. As the-, man points ont, the 4s allowance is a fraction over id per meal for each of'them; but how are these people to live on such * dole under such circumstances? The landlord of this man—himself _ not very rich in the ordinary sense of the term—says he will have to distrain tor his rent, and if that happens tbe man will be turned out.with his family. Sir, in tbe name of our common humanity, I beg of yod to do some, thing in this case. It is no use appealing to the Charitable Aid Board, they refuse to do anymore. It is simply shameful.—Yours, • J. T. M. Hobstsihv ;.
