A letter has been received from, the Oxford University stating that the Melbourne University has been admitted to the privileges of* a colonial University, .under the provisions of the Colonial and Indian University Statute. A TEST CASE. An important judgment has been given in the Supreme Court. As part of the Government retrenchment scheme, the Minister of Education in February last dispensed with sixty * seven married lady school teachers. Mrs Mattingley, one of them, instituted proceedings for wrongful dismissal.and Mr Justice A'Beckett decided that the circular issued announcing the dismissals was illegal in mode of dismissal, but formal notice was unnecessary; and the action of the Minister on the main question was uphald. Costs and £70 salary, from the date of the dismissal to the date of the answering of the petition, were awarded the plaintiff. The case was brought as a test one. A ROW OF COTTAGES BURNED. A row of eleven wooden cottages was destroyed by fire at Port Melbourne early this morning, and some of the inmates had a narrow escape of their lives, only escaping in their night clothes. THE ARCHBISHOP OF ADELAIDE. Adelaide, February 5. The appointment •of Dr. O'Reilly, Bishop of Port Augusta, to succeed the late Dr. Reynolds, as Archbishop of Adelaide, has been confirmed. i CABLE GUARANTEES. Hobabt, February 6. Sir J.
