Monday, February 4. ! (Before 8. R. Webb and N. C. Schumacher, Esqs, J.P.'a.) Drunk and Disorderly.—John Dyke was found guilty of being drunk and disorderly -in Norwich Quay on Saturday night,. and was fined 10s, or in default forty-eight hours' imprisonment. A first offender *vas fined ss, or iv default twentyfour hours' imprisonment.' A Serious Charge.—William Henry Pollard was charged on the information of Isaac Simpson with attempting to stab him on board the steamer Mamari, with intent to do him grievous bodily harm. . Isaac Simpson, seaman on board the steamer Mamari, deposed to being ashore on Saturday night and going aboard the steamer about 11.15 p.m., when he turned in. Accused came worse v for-ii<jQer-4ateir on, and called witness filthy names and wanted to fight him. Witness agreed to fight accused, and struck him in,the face across the' table. Accused then ran to bis bunk, got out the sheath-knife produced, and, reaching across the table, made a cue at witness , throat. Witness drew back bis head, and just escaped the knife. Accused, then ran round the table to get at witness, who made for the door of tbetforecaatle. As he went he felt something touch his back. While in the forecastle witness saw & man named Cooper catch hod of accused to check him. Thia enabled witness to reach the deck, which he would otherwise have been unable to do. While on the deck witness heard accused say he would let the matter drop for the present, bub witness would never reach London alive. Edward Cooper, night-watchman on board the Mamari, gave similar and also stated that when accused was making the second slash witneea caught him by the wrist and prevented the knife striking Simpson as it would otherwise probably have done. J. W. Staples, A.B. on board the steamer, deposed that the noise of the quarrel awoke him, and he saw the whole occurrence. His evidence was a repetition of that given ,by the previous witnesses. Constable , Garrett Fitzgerald, stationed at Lytteiton, deposed to arresting the , accused on the steamer on Sunday morning. Accused said he knew nothing about the matt3r. The knife produced was in his bunk. Accused, on being cautioned, i said he knew nothing of the charges made \ against him. Accused was committed for ' trial, bail being allowed, himself in £50 and two sureties of £25 each.
