Harriet Tyrrpet has been arrested lor the murder of her infant at Lauriston, where she was living with a Chinaman. She laid the child's head on a block and deliberately chopped it off with an axe. A lessee attempted to eject the holders of fifty claims held under miners' rights wife a view of working the cement on a large scale. The Warden decided in favour of the miners. He had an interview with the Premier -of Tasmania with reference to the control of the, Macquarie Islands, and requested that New Zealand should be allowed to control them in the same manner as the Auckland and Campbell Islands* The difficulty of preventing seal poaching at the present time was pointed out by Mr Ward. Sir E. G. N. Braddon said Tasmania would not consent to the cession of the islands, ba\ would favourably entertain giving New Zealand control of them. Mr Ward promised to place the matter before his colleagues.
